For any geosocial network, realtime is critical. These conversations and first encounters with strangers are happening in the moment and they represent our core business. If the focus hasn’t been on making that realtime experience robust then you’re at risk of losing your pulse altogether. Josh Simons Co Founder and CEO
Vampr is a mobile network for musicians - a meet-platform, different from a social/friend platform like Facebook. The main differentiator is professional networking - presenting personnel who fit your search criteria, one by one, with a thumb swipe as the primary mechanism to sift through potential creative collaborators. This approach plainly hadn’t been done when the Vampr launched.
The team set out to stand out from previous market leaders in the music-social space such as ReverbNation and MySpace which rely on a scroll/form-based approach to networking.
These apps were uninspiring and very Web 1.0. Music is sexy. Instruments and gear are sexy. Why shouldn’t an app or music platform be any different? Simplicity, design, the priority we place on support and being home to the most engaged community of musicians around the world are all contributing factors in our market-leading position, Simons
Why realtime and PubNub to deliver it?
Geosocial networks mimic the real-world interaction of meeting and getting to know other people in the world. As a result, Vampr needed a way to deliver this rich, seamless connectivity and communication between users of the app.
For any geosocial network, realtime is critical. These conversations and first encounters with strangers are happening in the moment and they represent our core business. If the focus hasn’t been on making that realtime experience robust then you’re at risk of losing your pulse altogether.
To deliver this interactivity, and provide a reliable, secure experience for any number of connected users, Vampr chose PubNub.
Simplicity to integrate and multi-platform support were stand out reasons we chose PubNub.
Security and privacy are paramount
With any platform or app that connects users, security and privacy are incredibly important. Users expect to be sure their data is being handled in a way that complies with regulations and that in giving their data, it will be respected. One of the most important regulations this year was GDPR compliance.
We recently made what information we store a little more transparent in response to the introduction of GDPR. Frankly, I’m very proud of how we store which data and why. As a musician and internet user first, I didn’t want any tech company having all of my details. My details are valuable. I wanted my tech companies to use as minimal information as possible in order to create more value for me, like what insight or assistance can you give me in exchange for these few pieces of valuable information about me.
I think Vampr does a brilliant job at this - for us, the value is not just in bulk of data but how we analyze it and return that for the benefit of the entire music ecosystem. Whilst it’s feasible that brands might be advertising on Vampr one day, we will never sell that data to those brands directly. It’s not in our nature.
Conclusion
People crave interaction, and PubNub provides the infrastructure and features to deliver it. For niche networks like Vampr, in their case, connecting musicians based on proximity, PubNub proved to be a powerful and accessible platform to get to market quickly, and know that as their user base grows, PubNub is built to scale with it.
